Heat Pump Installation Cost

The price you pay will depend on a few key things:

  • Property size – Larger homes require more powerful systems.
  • Insulation – Well-insulated homes retain heat more efficiently.
  • Current heating setup – Replacing a combi boiler? You may need new pipework or radiators.
  • Hot water use – Bigger families may need higher-capacity cylinders.

Heat Pump Grant

Yes — you could be eligible for a government grant of £7,500 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump, thanks to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This incentive is designed to help homeowners in England and Wales make the switch to cleaner, more efficient heating.

At Wright Renewables, we’ll guide you through the process and handle the paperwork as part of your installation.

“The grant won’t be around forever — it’s a limited fund and demand is growing fast. If you’re thinking about switching, now’s the time to act.”
Adam, Wright Renewables

Heat pump radiators

One of the most common questions we get is:

Do I need new air source heat pump radiators?

The honest answer is — it depends.

Radiators need to be appropriately sized for each room to work efficiently with a heat pump. In many cases, existing radiators are actually oversized, which can work in your favour. Sometimes, minor adjustments like spacing the radiator slightly away from the wall can help improve airflow and performance.

However, in some situations, radiators may need to be replaced. This is usually because they’re too small for the room, or because the pipework supplying them isn’t suitable. For example, during a period in the UK, many homes were fitted with 8mm microbore pipes — unfortunately, this diameter is too narrow to work effectively with an air source heat pump.

"For a period of time in the UK, builders used 8mm pipe to radiators. Unfortunately, that diameter is just too small for an air source heat pump to work.

Is an air source heat pump expensive to run?

Not at all — in fact, air source heat pumps are well known for their energy efficiency and can be much cheaper to run than traditional heating systems. Because they use electricity to move heat rather than generate it, they can deliver up to three times more heat energy than the electricity they consume.

The actual running cost will depend on factors such as your home’s insulation, the size of the system, and your electricity tariff. But in many cases, households see a noticeable reduction in heating bills — especially when switching from oil, LPG, or older electric systems.

If you combine your heat pump with smart controls, off-peak electricity rates, or even solar panels, you can reduce your running costs even further.

In short: No, air source heat pumps aren’t expensive to run — they’re designed to save you money over time and deliver excellent energy efficiency.
