A North Nottinghamshire contacted Wright Renewables with one simple goal: eliminate their gas bill and switch to a more sustainable, future proof heating system with Solar Power and Air Source Heat Pumps

From Gas to Green - How One Nottinghamshire Home Went Fully Renewable with Wright Renewables

When a family in North Nottinghamshire contacted Wright Renewables, they had one simple goal: eliminate their gas bill and switch to a more sustainable, future proof heating system.

With rising energy costs, aging radiators, and a combi boiler on its last legs, they wanted a smarter solution that would heat their home efficiently all year round and take advantage of new Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariffs.

Today, they’ve not only removed gas entirely from their property, but their home now generates, stores, and manages its own power using a combination of solar PV, battery storage, and an air source heat pump.

All installed by their local, trusted engineers at Wright Renewables. This is how we made it happen...

The System: A Fully Integrated Solar + Heat Pump Setup

Our design team specified a full package that would deliver all of the couple’s heating and hot water needs — plus cut their electricity bills dramatically.

What We Installed:

  • 14 × 410W JA Solar Panels (Total: 5.74kW system)
  • Solis Hybrid Inverter (6kW)
  • 10kWh of Battery Storage using 2 × 5kWh Puredrive units
  • HSBC 200 S Cylinder & Buffer Tank Combo
  • 18m of DN25 pre-insulated heat pump pipework
  • 14 new radiators - sized for low-flow heat pump operation

The result? A smart, quiet, highly efficient system that works with the building - not against it. The heat pump keeps the home warm and the water hot, while the solar system powers appliances, charges the batteries, and exports any surplus back to the grid.

Goodbye Gas: How the Heat Pump Took Over

Perhaps the most impressive figure from this installation is the total cost of energy from April to September: just £6.70.

That’s not £6.70 per month - it’s £6.70 across 6 months.

Thanks to long daylight hours, strong solar generation, and smart use of battery storage, the customer’s need for imported electricity dropped to almost nothing. The heat pump operated at extremely high efficiency in the warmer months, and the combination of night-time battery charging and solar self-consumption meant most of their usage was either free or very low-cost.

“We honestly couldn’t believe it,” the homeowner told us. “Every bill felt like a mistake - in a good way!”

For most UK homes, even during spring and summer, standing charges alone can top £15/month. This result proves what’s possible with a carefully designed solar and air source heat pump system, especially when paired with an agile electricity tariff.

January Comparison: Energy Costs Slashed in Half

It’s not just in summer that the savings shine. The homeowners reported that their total energy bill in January was 50% lower than the same month in the previous year - despite using only electricity this time, rather than a split gas and electric system.

How?

  • The heat pump ran efficiently even in cold weather, maintaining a cosy indoor temperature with far less energy than a gas boiler would need.
  • The smart battery continued to charge at night on cheap off-peak rates, covering much of their daytime use.
  • Their solar system, while less productive in winter, still contributed free power on bright days.

This year-on-year comparison is a powerful indicator of the real-world performance of renewable systems, especially in challenging UK winter conditions.

“We knew it would be more efficient. We just didn’t expect it to be that much cheaper - even in January,” said the customer.

Night Charging: Using Cheap Tariffs to Maximise Battery Value

One of the most exciting features of this system is its time-of-use battery strategy.

The Solis inverter has been configured to charge the 10kWh battery bank overnight during the homeowner’s cheaper Economy 7 (E2) tariff. At just 5.5p per kWh, this electricity is stored and used during the following day, replacing expensive daytime grid electricity (typically 25.5p per kWh).

During sunnier months, the solar panels charge the battery for free - but even in winter, the customer benefits from:

  • Off-peak battery top-up from the grid
  • Reduced reliance on peak-rate electricity
  • Power continuity in case of outages

This hybrid model of solar + night charging ensures year-round savings, a brilliant example of modern demand-side flexibility in action.

SEG: The Export Opportunity Gets Even Better

At the time of writing, this customer is signed up to a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) rate of 10p per kWh, meaning they earn credit for every unit of electricity exported back to the grid.

But Wright Renewables identified an even smarter option: switching to OVO’s SEG tariff, which currently pays 20p per kWh exported - double their current rate.

If the customer exported just 250 kWh/month on average, that would mean an Annual Income of £600:

By switching SEG providers, they could earn an extra £300 per year - further reducing their payback period and increasing the long-term value of their solar system.

“We always advise our customers to review their SEG options - not all providers offer the same rates,” says Lee Rolfe, Managing Director of Wright Renewables.

The Bottom Line: Monthly Cost Savings

Using real-life billing data and our system modelling spreadsheet, the estimated savings stack up like this:

Average Monthly Benefit

  • Gas Bill Before: £85/month (inc. standing charge)
  • Electric Bill Before: £105/month
  • Total Pre-Install Energy Cost: £190/month

Post-Install Estimate:

  • Electricity use (net): ~£80/month
  • SEG export credit (10p): ~£25/month
  • Total net energy cost: ~£55/month
  • Monthly Savings: ~£135

That’s over £1,600 in annual savings, plus no need for future gas boiler maintenance or replacements.

And when you factor in OVO’s 20p SEG rate and improved panel performance in summer, the annual benefit could exceed £2,000 in real terms.
